THE MOON (2023) 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW
The 2023 science fiction rescue adventure from South Korea. This is a beautiful steelbook which comes with an identical Blu-ray in addition to the 4K although the Blu-ray is not as good quality as the 4K of course. Image aspect ratio is 1.85:1 and sound is Dolby Atmos. This release cost £27.99 from HMV.

FERRARI (2023) 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW
Просмотров 3 тыс.7 часов назад
Michael Mann's 2023 biopic covering one very important year in the life of Enzo Ferrari and the famous Modena specialist sports car factory and racing team that bore his name. Featuring Adam Driver in the titular role with Penelope Cruz as his wife, the pair must navigate a path between insolvency and survival as they bank it all on the entry to the infamous, notorious 1957 Mille Miglia. The cr...
LATEST 4K PURCHASES + MATRIX RESURRECTIONS 4K UHD REVIEW

A visit to the Swindon HMV resulted in seven additions to my 4K UHD collection. Reviews to some or perhaps all of these will be coming soon but until then all are shown in this video. A few weeks prior to this I purchased the 4K of The Matrix Resurrections for just £9.99 and as this was one title many people had asked me to review when it was first released I decided to finally give it a try. I've made this video because I showed the tabs (curtains) and motorized masking in operation during my recent review video for DUNE PART TWO and this resulted in several questions in the comments section, plus a phone call or two! BOB MARLEY ONE LOVE 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW

4K UHD Blu-ray review to the biopic on the life of Bob Marley. Image aspect ratio is approximately 2.40:1 and sound is Dolby Atmos. There is only the 4K disc in this pack which in addition to the movie itself holds about an hour of extra features in lower quality high definition. It is a dual layer, 66Gb disc but I spotted no evidence of compression which is not surprising as the 55 to 60Gb lef...

Review to the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of DUNE PART TWO. Only a 4K disc in this pack but the steelbook version did include the Blu-ray. All the extra features are contained within the 4K disc so there shouldn't ever be a requirement for the Blu-ray assuming you have the requisite 4K disc player. Sound is Dolby Atmos with an option for 5.1. Image aspect ratio is 2.40:1 throughout and not the 1.90:...

DUNE PART TWO: REACTION & REVIEW 70mm IMAX

I finally had the time to get to see Denis Villeneuve's second instalment in his DUNE series and it had to be at the BFI IMAX where they had one of the twelve 15/70 IMAX prints exhibited throughout the world. The fact that there are 15/70 prints is significant as it confirms the impact that Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER had in 2023 which the film industry is now looking to take advantage of. ...

This is a preview of the DUNE PART TWO 15/70 IMAX print at the BFI IMAX which,as I type, I still want to get up to see before all the screenings are over. It's a blow-up from a 4K digital video master so I'm not expecting OPPENHEIMER quality but it was shot with about an hour of 1.43:1 aspect ratio so it should still be quite a special IMAX viewing experience. For quite a while now I have been mentioning what I call 'The 4K Fault'. This is because I found five 4K discs in my collection in a short space of time which would no longer play all the way through. I hope if you see the boy and the heron at HMV next time in a few weeks that you pick it up. It is the latest and most likely Miyazaki’s last film. The man has come out of retirement a few times (at this point, let’s just call them hiatus’). It’s a good one but a little confusing at times I recommend earlier work first like lupin the third castle of Cagliostro, castle in the sky, valley of the wind, my neighbor Totoro, spirited away, and howl’s moving castle. Many would also recommend Princess Mononoke, but I’ve never finished watching it so I can’t give an opinion on it.

      They are Japanese anime films and these films are up there with the best. And I’m not just talking about with animated films but just the greats in general. But yes if you’re new to the medium then these are the films i recommend. Many talk about Akira and from what I have seen I think it has the best animation bar none (although I’m not the biggest fan of the character designs) but it’s violent and i don’t know if i would recommend other then looking up the motorcycle chases on this.

    ...one of the reasons I will stay with BD: I'm using a front projector as well and not interested into "fiddling around "with the settings. Besides I'm perfectly happy with a good BD and have about 4000 of them - but that's another discussion.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920 День назад

      The fiddling to make things better (or not!) is part of the fun for me. I suppose you had to be a film collector to understand that though. Blu-ray is brilliant, no doubt about that. I underestimated it for a long time, probably because video projection wasn't always as good as it is now so we weren't getting the best out of them until we purchased our first 4K projector. But they are lying to us by putting up video imagery rather than film like imagery. Not always, but that's the usual difference even when a BD has been struck from the same master as a 4K disc. This is why the colours are unrealistic and the picture too bright. John.

      Now where have you been? I've missed our in depth discussions about Ms Hickey but what a great question this is. Well, a Lotus Esprit S1 would probably give you the best chance unless you had the money for a Lamborghini Countach or a Pininfarina Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer. Quite a lot of gals seem to prefer a Porsche 911 but given that the average mortal is unlikely to have been able to have afforded any of these in 1985 I'd say a Triumph TR7 with the full TriumphTune kit would be the way to go. And guess what I've been driving since 1985? Good to hear from you. John.

      It's a very good release David, no doubt about that. The image quality isn't among the best though but that was the case with the first film so a look the makers were going for. I think it works well but I didn't when I first saw the 2021 film. I thought the film grain was video noise because I knew it had all been shot on video. But it was actually compiled at 2K and then printed onto 35mm and transferred back again. Ridiculous really but apparently that was what was done. I think Part Two has been video from beginning to end so probably looks a little better if we really want to scrutinize it. It was impressive on the 15/70 blow-up print when you think it's only a 4K digital video to start with. John.

    I've reviewed the U.S. Blu-ray, the Italian 4K, and the U.K. disc that you have. It's the only one (that's easily obtainable, anyway) with both 4K and Dolby Atmos. The picture quality is significantly better in 4K than it is on the Blu-ray. Sharper, better detail, stronger contrast, and those Ferrari reds are more intense. The flat interiors that you're talking about were captured in relatively low light and the contrast is naturally more limited. That's how it looked in the theatres, too. So it's accurate to how the film was produced, even if it's not necessarily dazzling in those scenes.

      Thank you Cabal. The only reason I mentioned the low light interior shots was because I was watching for this review but otherwise I'd have simply been enjoying the film and wouldn't have taken any notice of them. If you don't mention such things though some people get quite nasty about it. I didn't mention the bug on the menu whereby it locks up if accessing it via the pop-up menu option. I didn't bother working out the series of key presses that generates the lock-up but it is there. Probably an incompatibility with certain Panny players rather than everything but as I failed to remember it while blathering on I detailed it in the description to the video. John.

      Another comment just told me it wasn't yet released in the USA but yet another comment said that a steelbook was released in Europe last year so that indicates it's getting a bit of a staggered release around the world. Perhaps because it's largely about the Mille Miglia that's why it didn't do well in the USA. The same reason that the USA didn't get the 'Le Mans '66' title on that great film because the USA is a bit insular when it comes to motor sport. Sebring, Daytona and Indianapolis are the biggies in America whereas the rest of the world Le Mans is infamous and the Mille Miglia was too in its day. John.

I found that when it got to the Mille Miglia I felt I was involved and almost there. I suppose it helped that we could feel the cars rushing past camera in here so that could be an element of why wifey and I enjoyed it so much. But we are classic car owners and I love driving a classic sports car where you can feel everything, the steering is like brail and the engine talks to you as you squeeze the go pedal. Sky are being a little deceptive plastering Sky Original on the cover. The film was not commissioned or funded by them. Instead they bought the finished article for distribution in cinemas and on home release/Sky. Michael Mann has been trying to get this film made since the early 2000's, and always intended it as a principally cinema release rather than say for streaming. Sadly the lack of audience engagement with cinemas since the Pandemic, probably led to it getting less screenings, than if Mann had been able to make it 20 years ago.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920 3 дня назад

      There was still a pretty good cinema audience 20 years ago but the terminal decline had set in by then owing to the declining standards in cinemas. I think back to that period now and cinema was brilliant compared to today but to be fair, there just aren't enough patrons to justify any expenditure now... unless it's a special cinema such as the BFI IMAX. Sky shouldn't have put their name on this one by the sound of it David. I never did like the buggers! John.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 3 дня назад

      @@moviecollector5920 There are a number of factors why cinema audiences are not what they used to be, across the board. Cinema ticket prices esp if you're taking a family are one of them. Although Vue are great value for money. And smaller differences between a good home movie system and a cinema's. Along with the time you gain back, ability to pause if you want to go the toilet/get a snack, and not having to put up with disruptive patrons. Really cinemas have become more about the in Martin Scorsese's words "Theme Park Ride" movies. I don't mean that disrespectfully as I believe these kind of films fulfill that brief, esp combined with 4DX (moving seats, scents etc). But that has to be the reason to go. Outside of Film Club settings like The Prince Charles with their retrospective screenings (often on film) and friendly, enthusiastic audience, there isn't really a place in cinemas for the traditional Mid-Budget Adult Drama like Ferrari. Back in the day these kind of films were Blockbusters in their own right, even if R rated/15/18 Cert. While the days of something like The Godfather being the highest grossing film of all time are long gone, Joker (2019) did show an interesting case where a hard drama about a beaten down society and it's effects on a mentally ill person could make over a Billion Dollars, as long as it was encased in a famous DC comic book character. A fact the director/writer himself acknowledged. It was the only way he could get his script greenlit. I agree. The Sky Original tag implies that if you go onto Sky Movies this is a film they made themselves compared to the other acquired films on there. But they had no involvement beyond the right to show it. As with the other films. I think the film's niche appeal and large budget is probably why the Hollywood studios passed on it (in a previous decade Paramount were going to produce it), so at least we can be thankful to Sky for giving it a cinema release. Although only in the UK, it's distribution elsewhere was picked up by other companies. And the actual funder of the film is an American independent film company called STX.

      When cinema tickets passed the £10 threshold the good old days of multiple visits died. It's now a case of pick and choose a handful of films in a year and they all tend to be big tent pole projects. When a cinema ticket for 1 film is now 1.5x or even 2x to a month's streaming service, I'm surprised people are surprised with the box office declined.

      @@AchtungEnglander My wife and I went into a pub earlier this year and a pint of beer and a half of lager was just under £10. If cinema tickets only cost that then it's a bargain in today's world... or at least it is in Britain. For a good cinema I expect it's more than a tenner a ticket. It certainly is to see a film - a real film, not a video - at the BFI IMAX. Everything is relative and with the cost of employing a person today, business rates, turning on the electrics, insurance etc. etc. etc. it's amazing that anything is running at all. You're right, telly does seem to be the most viable entertainment these days but won't it be awful if we lose cinema completely? John.

    • @AchtungEnglander
      @AchtungEnglander 2 дня назад

      @@moviecollector5920 I agree, but as consumers we all practice price relativity and opportunity cost. Given a lot of people have upgraded their living room systems to 4K TVs, sound bars and home theatres, they have built a cinema like experience at home. This is before technology could make VR easier to wear equivalent to putting on a pair of glasses. The demise of cinema would be terrible but given we live in a world where the high street bank is disappearing, businesses need to adapt. The best option would be to create more cinema subscription packages, incentives like free concessions (like a box of popcorn and a drink with the ticket price) or exclusive content like giftbags with material about the film or extra shows after the film like a director interview or making of the film. There are ways to save this business, I just do not see chains using any imagination or taking a risk. I wonder if a lot of CEOs are actually worth their salaries.
